Diyarbakır City Walls are the city’s most powerful symbol, with a monumental defensive system encircling the old city on a basalt rise overlooking the Tigris Valley. Towers, gates, and inscriptions and reliefs from different periods make the walls not merely a military structure, but an open-air archive of the city’s long history. The walls and the Hevsel Gardens are jointly protected as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
