Basilica Cistern

The Basilica Cistern is one of the great underground water structures built in the 6th century during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian. Measuring approximately 140 x 70 meters, the cistern contains 336 columns; its dim atmosphere, reflections on the water and Medusa heads are among its most distinctive features. It adds a unique spatial experience to the rich historical route around Sultanahmet.
