Sumela Monastery
Built on a steep cliff overlooking Altındere Valley in Maçka, Sumela Monastery is one of Trabzon’s most powerful symbols of history and nature. Its location approximately 300 metres above the valley, together with its rock church, chapels, student rooms, guesthouse and other monastic structures, forms an impressive whole. The origins of the monastery are associated with the early Byzantine period, while the main character visible today reflects traces of the Middle Ages and subsequent restorations.
